New York State Mold Training Summer Update
In four months on January 1, 2016, NY State will require by regulation (Amendment of Labor Law- Chapter 551) licensure of mold assessors and remediators. Additionally, this law will also establish minimum work practice standards. However, Mold assessment and remediation of owner occupied properties by the owner are exempt from the requirements of this law as are owners and their staff of multifamily residential and commercial property so long as the entity does not perform or offer mold assessment or remediation to the general public.
So within and over the next several months, all others who are in the business of performing Mold assessments and remediation MUST become certified by an approved NY State, Department of Labor Mold Assessment or Remediation (worker & super) trainer.
The NY State Department of Labor website, (http://labor.ny.gov/workerprotection/safetyhealth/mold/mold-program.shtm) has posted the appropriate material for training provider guidance and has out lined the required course content for each discipline. (Below table)

In addition to the required course content and subjects to be covered, the NY State Department of Labor requires a substantial amount of Hands-on Course Interaction. (8.5hrs Assessor, 13.5 Hrs. Contractor & 8.5 Worker).
Hopefully, this very unregulated environmental concern will become more civilized in NY State upon the initiation of this new law and having qualified and experienced training providers properly educating the those contractors in NY State who want to offer Mold and Moisture intrusion related services. By creating a program of basic qualifications, state regulatory accountability and requirements to define the end game – up front, a major advance will have been achieved with the value of IAQ and Mold related concerns in the state of NY for both its citizens and its contractors!
